Handheld Vacuum

If you've already read our section dedicated to car vacuums, you already know that a handheld vacuum is slightly different than a car vacuum. They do share many features in common, such as being handheld, small, and light. If you already have one of these vacuums or don't want to purchase a car vacuum for the car, don't worry, you can get by cleaning your car with a handheld.

Most, if not all, of these hold in your hand vacuums will be cordless. That's another major difference between the car vacuum, some of which have plugs that fit into your car or the standard electrical outlets. When you purchase a cordless vacuum, you will want to find one that has a built-in battery with a recharging station. The vacuums that are powered by non rechargeable batteries may seem cheaper because the initial cost is lower, but you will be spending lots of money purchasing batteries.

These machines can be extremely useful in cleaning hard to reach areas, or less durable surfaces. Try and limit these vacuums to cleaning small surface areas as they have a very small cleaning radius. We have listed some of the disadvantages you will have when using these smaller vacuums.

Disadvantages

  • They have a smaller cleaning radius which can prolong the time spent cleaning if it's a large space
  • They have a limited number of attachments, if any
  • They have a small receptacle which will need to be emptied more often
  • Rechargeable batteries can develop a memory which reduces the amount of operation time between charges
  • They have an inferior suction and cleaning power

Black & Decker CHV9608 9.6 Volt Cyclonic-Action Cordless DustBuster with AccuREACH - I was debating between this model and the higher voltage models that Black & Decker has, but I've found this one to be quite powerful and to provide more than enough suction power for my wood floors.

Hoover S1120 Hand Held Wet/Dry Hand Vacuum Cleaner -This small vacuum gets used more than any bigger one I have ever owned. It hangs on the wall in my pantry and is used in every room in the house. It is used to clean everything from dirt at doorways to spilled coffee on the counter. It is the handiest gadget I own. We bought a second one for our camper to vacuum the floor when we are not connected to electricity. Handy dandy machine.!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Machine
Eureka 71B Hand-Held Vacuum - I'd planned to get the small Dyson, but the reviews of this vacuum persuaded me to give it a try. It's absolutely excellent. It's the best handheld vacuum I've ever tried, and I've thrown more of these things away than I can remember. Fortunately, I've always saved the attachments. Sometimes they fit another model, sometimes they don't. Since there's no fancy coupling required to attach tools to the hose end of this one, its just friction, most fit it.

This is a solid, powerful vacuum. The filter is heavy-duty and seems very durable. It's easily removed and reattached. I use those over-priced compressed air duster cans to blow all the dust and dog hair off of the filter. Between this and my full-size Dyson, there's probably more of the family dog outside the house than in by now. As for the weight of this machine, it is a little heavy, but then I only have to support its weight when doing vertical surfaces or carrying it around. When it's vacuuming stairs and furniture, I let the horizontal surfaces support most of the weight.

Everything about this machine suggests its maker really put a lot of thought and effort into making an absolutely excellent product. And, I commend them for packaging it in protective plastic that can be easily removed without knives, pliers, bolt cutters, or a chain saw. The engineering on this one was obviously thoughtful and thorough.
