When most people think of a portable vacuum they think of the generic small handheld machines. While that is one category of the portables, there are other types which fit in the portable category too.
Any vacuum that is easy to handle and move to different locations will work. They will generally be limited to smaller size vacuums. When you are purchasing a vacuum you will want to think of what you will plan on cleaning.
There are two main categores for each and every vacuum; indoor and outdoor vacuums.
Outdoor Vacuums
The outdoor vacuums can be used indoors as well but they won't be able to clean your carpet floors as well as a pure indoor machine. These are usually heavy duty vacuums that do not have bags. Instead they have a compartment
that will catch all the debris. These are usually classified as wet/dry vacuums or "outdoors".
The outdoor machines are great for various jobs in the house as well. They are better than indoor vacuums as cleaning up grout, larger pieces of debris, and extremely dirty situations. So if you are doing remodeling of anyking, you will
want to get one of these to clean up after yourself. After the major cleaning is done, it's time to use the cleaners made specifically for indoor use only.
Indoor Vacuums
These machines are made for simple cleaning. They are built specifically for indoor surfaces such as carpet, chair fabrics, and car fabrics. These machines will typically have a bag to catch all the dirt which has been sucked inside.

Does the Job!
Black & Decker CHV4800 Dustbuster 4.8-Volt Cordless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner - I got one of these for Christmas and I love it. Great for small jobs (picking up litter, hair, dust). We've even used it in our cars. Charging is convenient, too. No bulky cradle to worry about mounting on the wall, there is just a plug. Also, I was happy to see that replacement filters were available both from Black and Decker AND Amazon should I need them.

Bare-Tool DEWALT DC515B 18-Volt Cordless 1/2-Gallon Wet/Dry Portable Vacuum - Just got this vacuum today and it is great. Has wonderful suction. Other reviews talk about it being noisy. This is not true. It is no louder than any other dust buster. I bought it without the battery as we have plenty of them from other Dewalt tools. I have already thrown away my dust buster. Highly recommend it.
Great Little Machine
Vacmaster VJ507 5-Gallon 3 HP Wet/Dry Vacuum - Before buying this unit I threw away a big, clumsy 6 hp Craftsman shopvac that started falling apart the day I bought it. Just opened this up and tried it. It's small, powerful and seems well made. 3 Horsepower is plenty. Suction is excellent ands it's very easy to move it around. My garage is about to get alot cleaner!
